Parents, young children enjoy family time at Play Group
Break out the snacks and toy chest— it’s playtime. Your childhood is, perhaps, filled with fond memories of grabbing your favorite toy and jumping into the world of your imagination. The fun is not limited to just young children, however. Play is beneficial for children and parents as it can provide the chance for bonding and quality time. That is the reason the office of Marine Corps Community Services on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune held its bi-weekly Play Pals and Parents Playgroup at the Tarawa Terrace Community Center, Aug. 2.
“We are here to help parents,” said Laura Taylor, TT Community Center recreation assistant. “The playgroup allows us to get to know parents and their needs. We can then direct them to other available resources in the community that can assist.”
The playgroups are divided into two groups. One is for children ages newborn to 23 months and the other is for children 2 to 3 years old. According to Taylor, the popularity of the play groups has increased over the years, which led to the event being held bi-weekly and being divided into two groups. For parents, the playgroup provides a chance for building a network of fellow parents while their children enjoy the activities.
“I love it,” said Shannon Hunt, mother of a young girl in attendance. “It gives me the chance to meet with other moms in the area and she gets to play with other children.”
A large assortment of age-appropriate toys were on hand for the little ones to enjoy as parents could join in and socialize with one another.
“We’ve been coming for a few months now,” said Andi McGill, a participating mother of a young boy. “I really enjoy bringing him out and it is great to meet fellow parents in the community.”
