New River Commissary assists service members with back-to-school essentials

With the new school year almost here, this article might find you scurrying about grabbing up the last items on your child’s school supplies list and your family squeezing in one last getaway before summer ends. The preparation can get hectic and costly. Thankfully, there are those in the community who understand and want to help. To assist service members with checking off the school supply list, the staff of the New River MCAS Commissary on Marine Corps Air Station New River held their annual Back-to-School Donation Drive and Giveaway, Aug. 15. This marked the second year for the event that is funded by the employees of the commissary.

“We want to make a positive impact for the children of the military community,” said Cheryl Cole, New River MCAS Commissary customer service manager. “We are aware of how the beginning of a new school year can bring a financial burden to families and we wanted to partner with them in ensuring their children’s success in school.”

The event featured bowling, snacks and games for participating children. All youths of school age received a grocery bag filled with back-to-school essentials. “It is an awesome experience to come together as a team and give back to the families in the area,” said Jonathon Gibbs, New River MCAS Commissary grocery manager. “I am glad to be a part of it.”

Families in attendance expressed gratitude for the commissary and the contributing employees who wanted to lend support.

“Meeting needs for children can be costly, especially for parents of multiple children,” said Linda McReynolds, a grandmother in attendance. “My grandchildren came last year and were looking forward to coming this year. This event is wonderful because it lets the kids have fun and gives parents great support.”
