Mothers and sons get the chance to bond
Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate motherhood and show appreciation and gratitude to that special lady in our lives. A bouquet, fine chocolate or jewelry are some of the ways people might express that sincerity to their moms. For many moms, the chance to spend quality time with their children is perhaps the most precious gift they can receive. The mothers who came to the Marston Pavilion on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, received just that at the annual Mother and Son Dance, May 12.
“My husband is deployed and this is one of the few times I can get out and enjoy a night with my boys,” said Abby Kenny, mother in attendance.
The Mother and Son Dance has been held since 2011. It serves as a way for mothers, who are also service members or spouses of service members, to have a special night to celebrate Mother’s Day with their sons.
“We went to it last year and (my son) has been asking when we get to go again,” said Lindsey Gentz, mother of a young boy. “It is very special to us both.”
The event featured a DJ, food and a lively atmosphere for those participating. You could not be near the boys without feeling their excitement and rambunctious energy as they danced the night away with their mothers.
“It is special to spend time with just your boys,” said Megan Davis, a participating mother. “You get to see a different side to them, with all of the dancing versus just playing at home.”
The event was also a time for mothers to grow in fellowship with other mothers and have a relaxed time of fun together.
“It is really fun for us moms too,” said Katie Feuquay, mother in attendance. “The event gives us a chance to let loose a bit and have fun with each other and our kids.”
“My husband is deployed and I have a nine-month old daughter as well,” said Bethany Ross, mother of two. “I felt my son and I needed some one-on-one time so we decided to come to the dance. It has given us the chance to bond and de-stress a bit from his dad being gone.”
