Camp Lejeune families dig into adventure
Put on your paleontologist hat and grab a shovel, we are going on a fossil hunt. From films like “Jurassic Park” to “Indiana Jones” we seem to love adventure and searching for treasures. Adventure was not in a distant land for families who attended the Fossil Fair at Onslow Beach on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Aug. 25.
“This is a combined effort of Onslow Beach, the Single Marine Program and many amazing exhibitors,” said Rick Young, Onslow Beach Lodging Division general manager. “We have added Cape Fear Raptor and a visiting North Carolina State University professor among others. I am pleased with the expansion that we have to offer families and hope more continue to join us.”
The Fossil Fair featured fossils, skeletal remains and other natural items for families to explore. The Aurora Fossil Museum and the Smithsonian Institution were among the participating organizations offering attendants the opportunity to learn more about their newly found treasures at their exhibits. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and wonder for both children and adults alike, as they learned where to find the different types of shark teeth on the beach.
“I really enjoy coming to fairs like this and share my passion for paleontology with the participants,” said Dr. Jim Mickle, N.C. State paleobotany and plant morphology professor. “Getting to introduce people to the lesser known field of paleobotany is a joy and people are fascinated by what the subject has to offer.”
In addition to the various exhibits, activities such as a dunking booth, crafts and a hunt for shark teeth and other marine biology along the shores of Onslow Beach were available for families to enjoy. According to Young, thousands had come out for the fair. The efforts of all those involved did not go unnoticed by the attendants.
“This is my first time coming to the Fossil Fair,” said 1st Lt. Miguel Cuespinosa, event participant. “I have a great interest in fossils and it has been great to explore here with my family.”
